Coach Brian Schanel

My name is Brian Schanel, I grew up in Suffolk County, Ronkonkoma to be precise, and attended Connetquot Highschool. My dad grew up in Patchogue and has Italian and Czechoslovakian roots. My mom was born in Germany, Bmerhaven. She moved to the U.S.A. when she was 8 and grew up in Holtsville.

I am currently going to school for a degree in education so that I can begin the next chapter in my life; a career in teaching. The tool that I will be using to teach students and help them develop into adults will be history. I hope to further my efforts in teaching by instructing kids to become better soccer players.

As a soccer player, I have just finished my senior year, playing at SUNY Old Westbury, where I have been attending school for the past four years. I also played for two teams within the Lake Grove soccer club from the age of 13 thru 17. One of my teams won the State Cup once, while my other team won the State Cup and countless other tournaments. The team maintained a spot in the top 20 teams in New York State and won the Premier Division and North East Regional Premier League in our final two seasons.

I love coaching youth soccer. At the end of each work day, I go home feeling very accomplished and I aim to make my students feel the same way. I get the opportunity to partake in two of my favorite passions, being outside in the fresh air and teaching soccer. If you see me around, I will probably have a ball at my feet; just juggling and dribbling around. From when I was young I would always try to walk around with a ball, I sometimes do so even when I coach! I love to energetically engage the kids in order to get them really into any activity it is they’re doing.  I love scoring goals and it gets me so excited and I try to bring that same excitement to each and every kid for every goal they score too! I always promote doing what makes you happy and doing it confidently; never feeling like you should hold back emotions. I believe that this quality is reflected in all of the kids I teach. I try to instill in them the same passion for the “beautiful game” as I have.

The game of futbol, or soccer, is in my opinion, truly the best sport to watch. I am saying that as a true fan of many sports such as football, basketball, hockey, baseball and really any other competitive sport. Soccer is called by the world “the beautiful game” for a reason. You may not see that true beauty at your child’s training sessions as it would when watching Messi and Ronaldo, but watching the sport at the top level and seeing the creativity and uniqueness that every player plays with is what makes it beautiful. I can’t wait to see what the future generations will bring to the table to continue evolving the “beautiful game”.

“Hi, Deborah. Thank you soooo much!! My son and all the kids had an absolutely fantastic time. The coaches were terrific — everyone was commenting on how great they were. On the way home, we asked him how he liked the party, and he said “that was AMAZING!!!” I would be happy to recommend you to anyone in the future who is considering having you do a birthday party."
